Simple Magick 2

Simple Magick 2

Planetary Timings and the Elements

As promised this is the second instalment of spell work and planetary correspondences, alongside magick of elements and what this may have to do with the planets.

Each day and each hour is ruled by a particular planet depending on its transition, this time is variable everyday and to work out what planetary hour it is, depends on sunrise and sunset. This may seem a bit fiddly to negotiate first, but once you get the hang of it’s not too bad! Magick can be conducted at any time, as long as your intention is peaked and ready, however you can use the planetary hours to assist you in increasing energies during particular spells, incantations, rituals and the like. I also like to think that if you cannot perform magick on the day you really want to ( you may be working for example) then harnessing the power of the planetary hour will assist you in getting the energies you need. Below are two tables of the planetary hours; one for daylight hours and one for night time hours.

You may need to grab a pen and paper, a stiff drink and find somewhere comfy to do the next bit, as to begin with it may seem a little complicated! So we need to work out when the hours begin, the length of the planetary hours and where they sit within our table. Be warned there is a bit of working out to do, so I have tried my best to break it down:

1. The first hour of everyday is ruled by the planet associated with that particular day, e.g. Sunday = Sun, which at least gives us a place to start!

2. You will need to know the sunrise/ sunset / sunrise times for the 24 hour period where you live - this can be found easily on the web or your mobile phones.

Today in my location: Sunrise was 07.31 hrs

Sunset is 17.32 hrs

Sunrise tomorrow is 07.29 hrs.

3. Now we need to determine the length of each daylight hour and each nighttime hour. To do this we take our sunrise and sunset times and work out how many minutes there are.

Day light hours:

Using the above: 07.31hr to 17.32hr means there are 10hrs and 1 minute of daylight, totalling 601 minutes ( 10 x 60mins + 1min = 601) . Divide this number by 12 to get the length of each planetary hour.

So 601 divided by 12 = 50.08 mins, therefore each daylight hour is 50mins long.

Nighttime hours

Using the above: 17.32hrs to 07.29hrs means there are 13 hours and 57 mins of night, totalling 837 minutes (13 x 60 + 57mins = 837). Again we divide this by 12 to get the length of each planetary hour.

837 divided by 12 = 69.75mins, therefore each night time hour is roughly 70mins long (1 hour and 10 mins).

Phew!! Ok, so now we have the planetary hours to correspond to.

4. Looking at our tables and using Sunday as our day:

Daylight:

Hour one begins at 07.31hrs and corresponds with the Sun

Hour two begins at 08.21hrs (50 mins later) and corresponds with Venus

Hour three begins at 09.11hrs (50 mins later) and corresponds with Mercury and so forth.

Nighttime

Hour one begins at 17.32hrs and corresponds with Jupiter

Hour two begins at 18.42hrs (1hr and 10 mins later) and corresponds with Mars

Hour three begins at 19.52hrs (1hr and 10 mins later) and corresponds with the Sun and so forth.

NOTE: These timings obviously change with the seasons and the transition of the Earth to the Sun, so in the Summer our daylight hours become longer and the night shorter, with the Winter bringing longer nighttime hours and shorter daylight hours. So if you have something particular in mind, then it would be worth working this out to suit your needs.

Now let’s move on to the Elements and how this may also assist in your magickal workings.

The Elements

Some practices use the elemental powers of nature to enhance energies, these consist of Earth, Air, Fire and Water (also Spirit/Aether/Goddess/God/Higher Power etc. may be included as one of the elements, but I’m going to discuss the basic elementals). Each corresponds or is associated with particular magickal outcomes, depending on belief some call on the elemental quarters or the winds within a circle, some may not work within a circle at all and simply use the elements as a means to amplify energies. There is no doubt some that say magick must be worked within a circle, not only for protection but also to direct energy, however I do know of some that simply enlist the energies of what they are using. As stated in my last lesson, I do not advocate either way, after all our paths are different as much as we are all unique, I’m simply offering a guide.

To begin:

NORTH (QUARTER/ WINDS) is Earth, your salt, earth or pentacle is associated with this element.

EAST (QUARTER/WINDS) is Air, your wand is associated with this element.

SOUTH (QUARTER/ WINDS) is Fire, your athame is associated with this element.

WEST (QUARTER/WINDS) is Water, your chalice is associated with this element.

Earth

As one may imagine Earth is a grounding element, slightly more subtle in its attributes and linked  to material things. Magick associated with the Earthly element includes; Prosperity, Abundance, Fertility, Money, Employment, Healing. So by using earthly elements in you Magick you will assist in drawing this energy to your intentions. When we consider what comes from the Earth, our crops, trees etc, they take time to grow, they need to be nurtured and tended to. This is the same for Magick conducted by this element - live your intention with positivity, revisit your spell work and repeat if necessary: let it grow and bloom!

Air

Air tends to link with communication, the way in which we communicate will tend to form how those in our environment react to us and therefore the energy that surrounds us. Think of being met by someone who’s body language is defensive and we immediately change how we react and vice versa. It is also an element of the mind and spirit, associated with Mental Powers, Wisdom, Visions, Psychic Powers. Use this element to heighten awareness, plus concentrate on how this is communicated - is it a written spell, spoken out loud as an incantation, poem, song or dance, choosing a form you feel comfortable with and conveys the message from your very essence, will only help with your intention. The air we breathe sustains life, it refreshes us, blows through us - just think how you feel when stuck on a cramped bus/train or in an office where you can’t open a window. As soon as you get off that hot, sticky, cramped bus or get out of your office quite often the first thing you do is take a deep breath!

Fire

A masculine element, active and volatile element which produces fast outcomes and promotes action. You can tell its masculine attributes from the stereotypical human based masculine traits; Lust, Courage, Protection, Action, Strength plus Exorcism and Health. Use items that may contain this element if you want a quick resolve to a situation or fast results. Be mindful if you just use this particular element in your workings- you’ve heard of burnout? This may be the same for your personal energies when using the fire element energies frequently. Fire instils a need for action - conducting Magick isn’t as simple as chucking a few ingredients together and hoping for the best. Your intention will require some form of action or understanding, whether it be simply changing your mindset on something, changing the way do something or going ahead and doing something. If doing a “I need a job” spell, then apply for jobs, give your CV out, ask around.

Water

A feminine element, soft, meandering, finding its own course. Just as a river finds it’s own way (often carving through the landscape) this element forms a path for you. It may be slower in it’s action, but it leaves a permanent imprint in the aether/universe etc (whichever you believe). Water is all sustaining, without it we cannot live (just as air), we are made up of it (between 60-65% of our body is water) and is the lifeblood of the planet. The female qualities are often soothing and purifying, as are the stereotypical human attributes of the female and mother. Linking with Magick associated with; Friendships, Love, Healing, Purification, Sleep, Meditation and Prophetic Dreams.

So what does this mean for Magick?

Each tool or item we use tend to have certain attributes related to elements, gender and planets. Honing energies of our tools, crystals, essential oils, herbs, incense etc specifically to these attributes, can amplify energy of our intentions or rituals.

For example; if doing a love spell at the Full Moon, then using Jasmine would assist in amplifying this energy: it’s ruler is the Moon, it also belongs under the water element and associated with love - plus if it can be used on a Friday full moon during hour 3 and five (daytime hours) or hour 5 and 12 (nighttime hours) it’s energy is amplified further.

As mentioned previously when discussing the Fire element, an intention needs a direction. Sitting at home moaning about not having a job, but not doing anything about it, is not going to get you a job! Sitting in your house like a hermit or recluse, box setting the life out of Netflix and eating way too much pizza and ice cream is not going to help find the man/woman of your dreams! As someone who has been with their husband quite a long time (I’m getting on in years ya’ know!) I have no clue on how these dating sites work, but if you don’t want to leave that comfy, bum imprinted spot on your sofa then, why not start there using your phone, tablet, computer to use one of these? Or why not give yourself a bit of self love, spruce yourself up an hit the town with your mates? You aren’t going to meet anyone holed up in your living room! These are just some funny examples but it rings true - use your magick to put out your intentions and follow up on them! What ever is destined to be yours will be.

So by understanding the basics of your week: day, planets, planetary timing + elements, we can see how they may assist with your magick greatly. If you choose to do it this way, with this increase in energy you may feel a bit zapped afterwards, so make sure you ground yourself and relax. (More on cleansing, clearing and grounding below).

Next lesson I will give details on easy to find herbs plus some other witchy faves detailing general uses, planetary rulers etc. to tie all this info up. Then I will move on to your basic colour correspondences  and then hopefully bringing these all together to talk about chakras and how these work towards assisting your magick.

Tips:

Grounding yourself releases energies back to the Earth - we don’t particularly want to carry the weight of universal energies with us all the time as it will make you feel lethargic and underpowered. Simple things like hugging a tree - okay, or you touching it with both hands if you want to avoid any unusual stares by passers-by! Intending your excess energies to be absorbed back into the Earth. Walk barefoot on the Earth, taking in the feel of it under your feet and placing unwanted or excess energy back. Meditating with a gem or crystal with grounding properties such as any black or red stones to absorb any excess you may be carrying.

Cleansing/Clearing yourself of energies you may not want, for example if working with spirits you may not wish for them to hang around. Have a cleansing bath of salts teamed with herbs or essential oils to cleanse your aura. Smudging yourself is also a good way to manage these energies. Envisioning your aura during mediation and doing a “aura spring clean during meditation may also help - view your outer self (aura) as a vortex of energy and start from head to toe and back again trying to identify any energy shifts to dispel. This can also be done in the shower, stand under the shower and envisage the water as pure light or crystals shearing through the energies that don’t belong to be washed away back to Earth.
