Liquorice is well known in herbal remedies and considered to be one of the oldest to be used for this purpose. Native to Western Asia and Southern Europe, liquorice has long been used to treat various ailments and to flavour sweets, drinks and medicines. Medicinal use of liquorice dates back to ancient Egypt, where the root was made into a sweet drink for pharaohs. It has also been used in traditional Chinese, Middle Eastern, and Greek medicines to soothe an upset stomach, reduce inflammation, and treat upper respiratory problems. Liquorice root contains over 300 compounds, some of which have demonstrated potent anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral effects in some studies. As a natural remedy it is a tonic, especially to the digestive system. During the Winter, when coughs and colds are a little more prevalent, make a tea of liquorice, lemon and honey to soothe a tickly cough - as well as acting as an expectorant for chesty coughs.
