No…not to be confused with Bay Laurel (which is Laurus nobilis) this is the genus Syzygium polyanthum, a different tree shrub altogether, a species of plant in the family Myrtaceae, native to Indonesia, Indochina and Malaysia. Although, granted it is known as the Indonesian Bay, where it is utilised in flavouring foods. Used in these cultures for traditional remedies in treating diarrhoea, rheumatic problems, cholesterol, hypertension, gastric problems, apoptosis, anti-fungal and diabetes. When looking through cultural recipe books from Indonesia and India, when it calls for bay, it’s this it is referring to, not the typical bay you buy in shops which is the bay laurel.
This herb has been known to be effective in treatment against issues such as cold and cough, due to possessing high antibacterial qualities and being a mucolitic. It is known to provide relief from pain as fever as well, plus being utilised for things like headache relief.
A tisane made with this herb may assist with reducing spots due to the antimicrobial action, brew and cool, apply with cotton wool over the problem area a couple of times a day. Just patch test first to ensure no reactions occur and store the tea in the fridge - use within three days.
While there is some confusion between the two (well there’s lots of leaves that come under the bracket “bay”- each from differing plants/shrubs!), this one links with and quite rightly so I feel, the deities of Eastern cultures. Ones such as Dewi Ratih (Moon Goddess), Shiva, Batari Sunan Ambu (Mother Goddess) and Kali; just to note she is not always thought of as a Dark Goddess. Despite Kali's origins in battle, her evolution saw her become a full-fledged symbol of Mother Nature in Her creative, nurturing and devouring aspects. Known and referred to as a great and loving primordial Mother Goddess in the Hindu tantric tradition.
With these in mind, this herb can be used for general cleansing of the home and self, making a wonderful herb to add to simmer pots - if you don’t like the smoke of burning it on charcoal, mixed with other cleansing herbs of scent such as camphor (you’ll only need a smidge of camphor as it’s quite strong - also available on the website 😊). To assist in ridding stagnant or dark energies.
Useful for stuffing poppets related to healing and health, actually much like Bay Laurel, add with other healing herbs.
Clairvoyance is also supported, a bit like Bay Laurel. Use in spells rituals to call upon energies.
Comes in a sealed age weighing approximately 14g (1/2oz).
