Kinda weird pong this one, hardly surprising it is also known as Devil’s Dung! Reminiscent of putrid garlic I would say, but doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its uses! Asafoetida is a gum from a variety of giant fennel, and is a very useful spice for those who can’t or won’t eat onion or garlic, as it adds a similar depth and savouriness to food. Indeed, Jain and Brahmin Indians, who are prohibited from eating garlic and onions, use it a lot in their cooking.
There is some scientific evidence that the chemicals in asafoetida might help treat IBS and also might protect against high blood levels of certain fats including cholesterol. Chemicals called coumarins in asafoetida can thin the blood, so be mindful if you are on blood thinning medications already.
Magickally is a really good protection/ purification herb. I just probably wouldn’t keep it on my person! Although if you are totally desperate you can carry to ward off colds and negative energy…or vampyres…..
If using to clear your space during clearing/ purifying, I’d suggest opening a window or door. You can use to make an incense….just a tickle will do, to clear manifestations and to drive away negative energies, spirits…or other humans.
