Frigga is the wife of Odin, leader of the Gods and Mother to Baldur and step mother to Loki. Here she is seen sitting on an ornately patterned throne, holding a large staff in her left hand and a set of keys in her right. A small lamb lies by her feet, along with a detailed chest and vase. This Goddess of marriage and protector of home and families would make a welcome addition to any mythological or Nordic collection.
Frigga
In Germanic mythology, there are multiple pantheons of Gods, and one pantheon is known as the Aesir - the Gods of sky and warriors, whose world is Asgard at the top of the World Tree. Frigga (also known as Frigg) is their Queen and All-Mother. Frigga's name means "beloved", and it is cognate to several Indo-European words, variously meaning "to marry", "to love", "wife", and "beloved lady". She is considered a goddess of wisdom, and in lore is the only deity other than Odin who is permitted to sit in the High Tower of Hliðskjálf. She was (and still is) revered to be a Goddess of marriage, protector of families and home, childbirth, fertility and even small industry, making her much loved in ancient times by women. A Goddess of social order, peace and with her seers knowledge promotes wisdom, she is said to know all fates, but keeps them in confidence. She is one of the only Goddesses to keep her own authority and power as wife of a God. It was also said that she pulled the wool from the cloud-sheep to spin and weave the garments of the Aesir (hence the lambs) and Mother’s Night was auspicious for oracles to be cast, as Frigga was thought to sit at her spindle, weaving the destinies of men and gods alike. Frigga’s holy day is “Mother’s Night,” which was absorbed into Christmas Eve, but in earlier times was the eve of the Winter Solstice.
