According to some Native American cultures hanging a dreamcatcher (or sacred hoop) is said to dispel negative dreams, by catching them in the web and then to dissipate in the rays of the morning sun. Good dreams however slide down the feathers to the sleeping person below.
A symbol of protection, the Ojibwa tribe honoured a maternal “Spider Woman” who was a spiritual protector for children and babies. As the tribe grew in size and dispersed across the land this mystical spirit could not protect or watch over all the members. So she created the first dreamcatcher, with mothers and grandmothers following suit creating their own in order to protect their families.
