A neat little item, ready for your altar! The wand represents the element Air; fitting them one of these takes the form of a bird, with its position on the altar of East. You may also possess an Athame- both can be placed to the East.

The Owl

Owls are of course associated with witchcraft, Greeks and Romans believed witches could turn themselves into owls, and in this form would come to suck the blood of babies - okay a tad drastic! In other cultures, owls were simply the messengers of witches (hmmmmm anyone remembering their Harry Potter here?) or hooted to warn of the approach of a witch.

These birds were most often associated with the Crone aspect of the Goddess, often guiding to and through the Underworld being a creature of keen sight in darkness, and a silent and swift hunter. It can help unmask those who would deceive you or take advantage of you. In Ancient Greek mythology the Owl was a creature sacred to Athena, Goddess of the Night and who represented wisdom. Athena had a companion Owl on her shoulder, which revealed unseen truths to her, lighting up her blind side, enabling her to speak the whole truth, as opposed to only a half truth.

In Welsh lore, with the Owl is being a night predator, the only bird capable of defeating the swift falcon and then only at dusk - its time of power. The Owl symbolizes death and renewal, wisdom, moon magick, and initiations. Welsh Goddess Arianrhod shapeshifts into a large Owl, and through the great Owl-eyes, sees even into the darkness of the human subconscious and soul. She is said to move with strength and purpose through the night, her wings of comfort and healing spread to give solace to those who seek her. A star and moon Goddess, Arianrhod was also called the Silver Wheel because the dead were carried on her Oar Wheel to Emania (the Moon-land or land of death), which belonged to her as a deity of reincarnation and karma. The Mother aspect of the Triple Goddess in Wales, her palace was Caer Arianrhod (Aurora Borealis), or the secret center of each initiate's spiritual being.

Hand carved owl design, wooden wand of decent length, measuring approximately 25cm x 1cm

The Pentacle

One of the most recognisable symbols within neo-pagan culture and witchcraft. The five sided star (pentagram) is normally made from a continuous line with no breaks and interlinks all forces. The circle surrounding it represents protection and the ever-changing, everlasting circle of life and nature. As an unbroken line, the circle also nods to the ideas of eternity and infinity. It’s upward point is one to symbolise the spirit ascending above matter. Each point represents earth, water, air, fire and the spirit.

The pentagram itself has been used throughout history, with early versions found on Sumerian pottery dating to around 3500BCE and Pyathagoreanism of the ancient Greeks (6th Century BCE) used the pentagram as a symbol of mutual recognition and wellbeing.

This wand has been hand carved and is a more typical wand length..in that a true wand measures from the inside of your elbow up to the top of your middle finger. This one measures approximately cm long, with a decorative pentacle carved at one end.
